Welch says courts, not Congress, must resolve election disputes

WASHINGTON, D.C. | Vermont's U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D) released a statement about the Jan. 6 Electoral College Certification:

"Today, Donald Trump and his allies in Congress are challenging the sacred principle of our constitution and democracy – the right of the people to determine who their leaders will be. The people elect the president through the electoral college, not politicians. The courts adjudicate election disputes, not politicians. And elections are primarily conducted by the states, not Congress.

"The spectacle in Congress today is an attack on our democracy and constitution. President Trump and his allies are attempting a last-ditch effort to overturn an election he lost. Their attempts will fail and Congress will officially certify Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next president and vice president of the United States today.

"But the damage being done by President Trump and his Congressional allies is real and profound. Our task is to restore America’s faith in democracy as the best hope for humankind."
