VTrans pitches self-driving car testing to Springfield – Eagle-Times

The Vermont Department of Transportation wants the Town of Springfield to help them test automated vehicles in Vermont. Cutting edge stuff – but is it safe?

“Michael Obochowski, VTrans principal assistant, and Joe Segale, director of the VTrans Policy, Planning and Research Bureau, gave a presentation on the five levels of automated vehicles being used or road tested in Vermont and explained that he is currently in the process of writing a policy plan for municipalities that were interested in allowing testing of stage three, four and five automated vehicles. Presently, municipalities can either opt-in or -out. But, Segale is looking at undecided Vermont municipalities to consider opting in as a way to get ahead of what is inevitably going to be by 2050, according to Segale, with possibly mixed vehicle types from non-automated and primarily automated to fully automated.
