Big Marijuana is already taking over the Vermont marijuana industry, as evidenced by three of Vermont’s five ‘medical marijuana’ dispensaries being owned by large out-of-state corporations.
"An early sign: All five of the state’s medical marijuana dispensaries have indicated they might expand into the new recreational market. Three of them already rely on high-profile, out-of-state investors:
• Grassroots Vermont, located in Brandon, has for years operated with funding from New York- and Toronto-based iAnthus Capital Holdings. Grassroots' founder, Alexandra Ford, is the sister of iAnthus' CEO Peter Ford.
• Vermont Patients Alliance (Montpelier) and PhytoCare Vermont (Bennington) share leadership and funding. Both, in effect, are in the investment portfolio of Chicago-based Grassroots Cannabis — which is currently in negotiations to be acquired by an even bigger corporation: Wakefield, Massachusetts-based Curaleaf."
