USS Vermont nuclear sub delivered to Navy - Vermont Business Magazine

The latest warship to bear our state’s name is a nuclear submarine that can do the work of both attack and ‘boomer’ missile subs, carrying out all seven ‘core competencies’ of the US Navy submarine force.

“Virginia-class submarines displace 7,835 tons, with a hull length of 377 feet and a diameter of 34 feet. They are capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots and can dive to a depth greater than 800 feet, while carrying Mark 48 advanced capability torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Vermont Governor Phil Scott said Friday, "This proud day for Vermont." He expressed disappointment that he and other state officials could not attend the launch in Connecticut because of the social distancing and travel restrictions associated with the coronavirus. Vermont is a flexible, multi-mission platform designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; delivery of special operations forces; strike warfare; irregular warfare; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and mine warfare.”
