State finds no significant contamination at Vermont Yankee – Brattleboro Reformer

Allaying the fearful predictions of anti-nuclear activists, a non-radiological inspection by the State of Vermont has turned up “no real significant contamination” at Vermont Yankee. The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversees all potential radiological contamination, but the State has regulatory oversight over all other possible contaminants.

"Emily Boedecker [commissioner of Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation] told members of the Vermont Nuclear Decommissioning Citizens Advisory Panel that while there is some shallow soil contamination at the Vernon site with polyaromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, and some shallow groundwater contamination from other volatile organic compounds near fuel tanks and the plant's main transformer, there is no water supply contamination and no bedrock well contamination."
