Sanders: if elected, I will break up the media - VT Digger

Bernie Sanders says corporate control of the media is a big problem. President Sanders would fix their wagon, he promises. Government control of the media - it's a beautiful thing. Or is it?

"Sanders’ plan, released Monday, comes after weeks of criticizing the mainstream media for negative coverage of his campaign. In particular, his proposals target large media industry players and would enforce strict antitrust laws to prevent Facebook and Google, online advertisement giants, from using their “monopolistic control” to financially undermine smaller news organizations."

I don’t like the synopsis but, I’m open to learning what I am not understanding about this article. No one said anything about gov controlled media. PBS is sort of gov controlled but union/coop control is not the same as gov controlled. The thrust of the article is about stopping massive mergers. Something I assume the market has always needed in any managed economic system. Facebook and Google are not going to spit themselves up. Should we let them just take over their respective industries? They seem poised to do so. Gov has to stop monopolies because their is no other force that can stop a runaway corporation.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m missing something? Its important to protect the 4th of state as independent from the effects of gov, so it can be impartial in it’s criticism of the gov, and yet it’s also important to protect speech from the effects of monopolies, isn’t it? Should there be no merger regulation?
