NorthStar, the company decommissioning Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, is getting good marks for safety from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. That's good news for NorthStar, which hopes to build a national reputation for nuke plant decommissioning, and REALLY good news for Brattleboro area residents. The only thing that's missing is the carbon-free power - 620 megawatts! - that Vermont Yankee used to generate. Oh - and VY's more than 600 great-paying jobs.
"The inspections, which took place over four weeks of four days each, included not just observations by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission resident inspector Steve Hammann, but also interviews with Vermont Yankee personnel, plant walkdowns and a review of procedures and records."
