Newport votes to keep ATV traffic - AP

The voters of Newport have spoken - they like the idea of ATVs traveling on city streets. Yesterday’s repeal vote failed.

"Newport residents voted 414-294 at the polls on Tuesday, said city clerk James Johnson. The program would allow the vehicles access to city streets on a trial basis from May to October. The City Council voted 3-1 in favor of the ordinance last fall, but a petition forced a revote. Newport Mayor Paul Monette said he was “pleased” with the outcome of the vote, but that the trial “can be stopped at any time” if issues arise.
