The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) says the 2017 assault on Charles Murray, the disinviting of a free-speech Polish diplomat, and the censoring of a demonstrating student has earned Vermont’s “little Ivy” college a list on 10 worst colleges for free speech. The college will have a chance for redemption when Murray appears to speak on campus again March 31.
"Last April, campus administrators unilaterally canceled an event where Ryszard Legutko, a controversial Polish scholar and politician, was set to speak, citing “safety risks.”
"They denied a willing audience the opportunity to hear Legutko’s arguments and critics from challenging him, either through peaceful protest or pointed questions," FIRE wrote about Middlebury in their list.
"The unilateral cancelation of Legutko’s speech was one of the most troubling infringements on student and faculty free speech and open inquiry rights we saw last year."
