A bald eagle struck by a dump truck across the Connecticut River from Brattleboro has been euthanized, after efforts to heal its wounds failed.
"Bomba found the eagle near the intersection of Route 63 and Route 9. He described seeing skidmarks where the dump truck tried to stop to avoid hitting the eagle. He said he thought the bird might have been eating a carcass, tried to get away too late and flew into the dump truck.
"It was definitely clear that he tried to slow down and stop, but it did hit the bird," Bomba said, noting that the scene was near Spofford Lake, where a pair of eagles has been seen all summer. He had been concerned that the eagle could not stand and did not have control over its feet.
