Challenger to Speaker Mitzi Johnson faces determined primary opposition - Bennington Banner

Rep. Cynthia Browning (D-Arlington) has declared her candidacy for House Speaker, if re-elected. She also called out Johnson on the floor of the House and insisted on a quorum for a crucial vote on remote voting. Now, she faces a tough primary challenge.

"The entry of Bongartz into the race as part of a joint campaign with Rep. Kathleen James, D-Manchester, sets up a potential challenge to longtime state Rep. Cynthia Browning, D-Arlington. It comes a few weeks after Browning made a controversial quorum call on the House floor on a proposal allowing remote voting, bringing lawmakers back to the Statehouse for a vote. The procedural move led to the state Democratic Party publicly criticizing Browning, and to House Speaker Mitzi Johnson removing Browning from the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. James was among House Democrats critical of Browning for the move."
