Sanders claim about black men and criminal justice hard to prove - VT DIgger

Politifact reports that it's hard to find substantiation for Sen. Bernie Sanders' August 15 claim that one in four black men end up in the criminal justice system. However, sources cited by the Sanders campaign do show significant racial disparity.

"According to a dataset maintained by the National Center for Juvenile Justice, there were an estimated 212,000 juvenile delinquency offenses, including probation, among black youth (mostly commonly defined as anyone 17 or younger) in 2017. U.S. Census data show that there were an estimated 5.25 million black men 17 or younger in 2017. That would put the offense rate for juvenile black men at around 8.7%."

There are a lot of studies and it is hard to figure out what’s what. Bernie does have a long way to go with African-Americans.

Bernie has long sought to ingratiate himself with the AA community whose support he desperately needs if he is to be a contender in the 2020 cycle. Hyperbole has been a favorite tactic of his for a long time. No surprise here.

It looks pretty easy to prove. Your numbers show 8.7%. Bernie’s is 25%.
Looks to me that Bernie lies!
